Water expands when it freezes, and that can damage valves and fittings. Many other products thicken in the cold, which makes them slow to drain.

Protecting totes

  • Drain water from valves and hoses when freezing weather is coming.
  • Store totes indoors or in a sheltered spot where possible.
  • Use insulation wraps or heaters made for IBCs, following the maker’s instructions.
  • Check the product’s data sheet for its storage temperature range.

After a freeze

Inspect the valve and bottle for cracks before relying on the tote again, and test with a small amount of water.
